Q&A from "Learning Interactions On Mobile Devices. What works? What doesn't ?"
What is the future of html5? As flash had a firm development associated to it, where will html5 almost 5 years down the line? (OR) What other advantages does HTML5 have over Flash. Has Flash really lost to HTML5? HTML5 is a standard that is evolving. So as opposed to Flash, development means the standard getting finalized and all browsers basically supporting the specifications and features outlined by the W3C for HTML5. The standard should be finalized in less than 5 years from now. Browsers would probably have consistent support for most HTML5 features, unlike the disparity that exists today. In context of mobile at least, HTML5 seems to be where things are headed, especially since Adobe has announced that it will not support Flash on mobile devices.
Can you tell more about the Adobe Wallabe product? Adobe Wallaby is a project that Adobe Labs has undertaken to create a Flash to HTML5 converter. The idea is to take a Flash file (.FLA) and convert it to HTML5. This project is still in Beta. There are limitations of course and one main one is that interactions are lost in conversion and you have to program them back in using HTML5. You can read more at: here
Is it better to convert Flash to HTML5 or building content in HTML5 from scratch ? Firstly, there is no direct way yet to convert from Flash to HTML5. Even though Adobe Wallaby project is in Beta and is an attempt to create just that converter it is not perfect. But you can use that as a starting point if it helps. Most often though you are better off starting from scratch, because some things that are possible in Flash may not be possible with HTML5 anyway.
Can you give some references for SCORM local storage? I would like to read more about this. Check out Project Tin Can, the new SCORM standard that is expected to be released later this year. In terms of HTML5 local storage, you can look into ‘LocalStorage’ and ‘SessionStorage’ objects introduced in HTML5.
What about use of Quick Time for video? MOVs work on iOS devices but are not Apple's preferred format.
MOVs work on iOS devices but are not Apple's preferred format. The biggest challenge is the level of support for HTML5 across various browsers varies quite a bit. So you should always test against different browsers. Other differences like default media supported by each browser is different, so you need to make sure you have the necessary formats. Lastly HTML5 is really not just the HTML5 tags, it is a combination of HTML5 tags + CSS + JavaScript, so you need to familiarize yourself with these 3 things to leverage the HTML5 capability to the fullest. If you are running HTML5 content on older computers running older browsers, chances are HTML5 tags will not work.
Which is best? Sencha, Appcelerator or Phonegap? Phonegap is owned by Adobe now and is free. Sencha is similar to JQuery Mobile and maturing quickly as a development environment for web kit-enabled mobile browsers. Finally, Appcelerator is independent and innovating faster IMO
Will an iOS native app work on Android? No. The programming language that is used to develop native apps for the two platforms is different. iOS uses Objective C while Android uses Java.
If HTML5 uses HTML and JavaScript coding, does it also leverage CSS code (tags) for further control of design layout and formatting? Somewhat so with lots of newly supported tags.
Is it possible to create an eLearning course which would work across various devices? Yes, for e.g. an HTML based course could probably play on all these devices, or even some video/animation.
We have heard that HTML5 won't be standardized until around 2015. It's still an evolving tool. Still work is in progress but enough is present to get you started.
Can you give some references for SCORM local storage? I would like to read more about this. Check out Project Tin Can that's coming.
Isn't Flash on the way out? Why not just HTML5? Flash is on the way out but will be supported for a year or so on select devices. HTML5 is on the rise and tools are supporting it better.
Are there huge differences in the costs in developing HTML5 vs. Flash? On the cost parameter, HTML5 is cheap because unlike Flash HTML5 is free and standard and there is no requirement of any software to be purchased and there are no plug-ins. HTML5 is an open standard and free, so there is no cost. Flash requires you to purchase the developer license, even though the player is free. So really the cost difference will depend on how many developers you have.
What are your experiences in the long term maintainability of Flash vs. HTML5? Initially, HTML5 might need more maintenance as it is still a developing standard and level of support provided on various browsers is varying. Compared to that Flash is stable and provides ubiquitous support on various browsers and devices.
How is Windows Mobile developing? Microsoft has essentially ended development support for their older Windows Mobile operating system to focus their attentions on their newer Windows Phone 7 OS which proves far more flexible and stable. The foundation of Microsoft's partnership with Nokia is delivering next generation phones based on WinPho7 and beyond.
Any issues with Adobe CS6? Adobe's recently released Creative Suite 6 launches offers a wide variety of tools for creating mobile-friendly content/courseware and has several features that are aimed at making mobile content creation and delivery easier for practitioners. The overall focus on these tools is still HTML and Flash-oriented but extensions and methods to output fluid template designs and HTML5-based content are appearing in number across the suite making delivery to handsets and tablets more practical. There are a few included utilities that aim to convert Flash FLA files into HTML5 content but full support for converting action script is still in the wings. Significantly, there were no announced updates for Adobe's popular eLearning Suite tools including Adobe Connect and Captivate to support HTML5.
What is this BBNX all about? BBNX is the name for RIM's upcoming new mobile operating system that will replace their traditional BBOS offering. It is based on QNX, a real-time OS (thus supporting true multitasking) and the suite of tools associated with BBNX appears to be quite rich for creating both native Apps and mobile web apps. It is slated to appear later this calendar.
What are the "average" costs of development? About the same as "e" in practice or a little less but it depends on the tools you're using. Most "m" courses are not nearly as long, involved or complex as their "e" counterparts meaning development time can often be shorter thus cheaper but exceptions exist for sure.
What is "e world"? "E" world is a generalization of content delivered via standard online learning through a PC/laptop connected via a web browser. This contrasts with "m" which is the experience while on a handset or tablet.
Which is a good tool to use for creating apps that can be deployed on multiple mobile devices? There are many rapid development tools that we mentioned in the presentation including our own, Raptivity. For the complete list refer to the Technology matrix slide in the slide deck. You can also use frameworks like PhoneGap and Sencha to package content as native apps for various devices.
